Testing fee is $70, money order only ($15 for each retest).

Once test capacity is reached, pre-registration will close. Registration is required for those individuals who are planning to take all 5 subject tests and/or those who are retesting and/or those who are continuing with individual subjects.

  • All 5 tests are given from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.  
    Retesters may take any of the 5 subjects.

  • Testing is held at the Downtown Library.

GED Test Description
People who have not had the opportunity to complete their high school education may earn an Arizona High School Equivalency Diploma by successfully completing the General Education Development testing series.

The test is made up of the five sub-tests outlined below. With the exception of the essay portion of the Language Arts/Writing Test, which requires you to write an essay, all questions on the G.E.D. are multiple choice. Calculators are now used for Part 1 of the Math test however you MAY NOT bring your own calculator. The examiner will provide you with a calculator.

Initial Testing
All five tests must be administered before submitting the tests to Arizona Department of Education for scoring. All five tests must be taken at the same testing center unless a waiver has been granted by the GED State Administrator.

Testing Costs

  • There is a $70.00* testing fee.  Money order payable to ADE only (no personal checks or cash).  Fees are Non-Refundable.
  • Each retest in a single subject costs $15.00*.

Age and Identification Requirements
You must be 16 years of age or older to take the GED Test

  • Present 2 forms of identification. At least one must be a legal ID with a photo and show your birth date. Both must be from an official government agency or school, e.g. driver's license, passport, birth certificate.  

If you are 16 or 17 years of age: In addition to the above, you will need to bring the following:

  • An official withdrawal statement from the last school attended showing that you are officially withdrawn from school
  • Written notarized permission from a parent or legal guardian  Sample letters to use: Word document or PDF format
  • Documentation verifying home schooling (if applicable)

Preparing for the GED

  • GED Preparation help is available, although we no longer have formal GED classes.  Adult Education/GED Preparation or call 480-782-2810 for registration information.
  • On-line GED Preparation is also available through the Learning Express Library available in the library's Education Resources.  Select Learning Express Library.  From home, you will need your library card number (no spaces) and PIN.
  • GED Preparation classes are not required in order to take the GED test.

Scoring and Retesting

  • MUST obtain at least 410 on each test, AND MUST obtain an average score of 450 or higher on the entire test (which is 2250 points) in order to pass the GED test.
  • May begin re-testing 30 days from the completion date of your original testing.
  • A re-test (i.e. math) may be taken a maximum of 3 times.
  • Must PASS all 5 parts of the GED test within 36 months of the start date.

Special Accommodations
Provisions can be made for special accommodations for the GED test such as large print, furniture modifications, or extension of time. A special accommodations form needs to be submitted to the AZ Dept. of Education for approval at least 60 days before scheduled testing.
