Ten year old Mirka is “yet another troll-fighting 11-year-old Orthodox Jewish girl,” who is bored with knitting and longs to slay dragons. She has a short temper, a skill for arguing with her (not evil) stepmother, and lots of self confidence. Can she channel her aggressiveness and use her smarts to earn her sword?
Hereville: How Mirka Got Her Sword is a quirky and fun graphic novel. Some of the circumstances Mirka finds herself in are so outlandish that you can't do anything but laugh. Barry Deutsch created a smart graphic novel with a strong, spunky, and capable heroine. I also enjoyed reading up on some of the Jewish customs and Yiddish phrases that are throughout the book. A fast, enjoyable read that I highly recommend to anyone who wants to laugh. - Becca (Sunset)
