The City of Chandler recently became a participating member of Read On Arizona, a statewide collaborative literacy project comprised of community organizations and businesses committed to ensuring that every child, birth through age five, obtains the necessary literacy skills for school readiness. Read On Chandler will work toward improving early childhood literacy through the development of a shared vision: the establishment of a City-sponsored literacy goal that all children entering kindergarten are ready to succeed in school.
Children entering kindergarten without the skills they need to succeed in school rarely meet the critical milestone of reading proficiently by third grade, a strong predictor of future academic and vocational success. Success in tackling this crisis requires that young children in Arizona have strong learning experiences from birth through third grade - rich in literacy and language acquisition at school, at home, and in the community.
The Chandler Public Library is a strong supporter of these efforts, providing high-quality early literacy programs to the Chandler community. Library programs include storytimes (Lapsit, Toddler, Preschool, and Family), the STEAM based Create-Play-Learn programs for toddlers and preschoolers, and the Read to Succeed! tutoring program for at-risk first graders at Downtown and Basha library locations.
