Oh, Judy Blume, I am so glad you're back! In the Unlikely Event, Blume's new book for adults, takes us to 1951 and 1952, where there was a chain of airplane crashes in Elizabeth, New Jersey. We meet many characters who are affected, directly and indirectly, by the crashes.
The main character, Miri, and her mother are from a working class family, living with Miri's grandmother and uncle because Miri's mother, Rusty, never married Miri's father. We are then introduced to Miri's best friend, Natalie, and her family. They are well-to-do and seem like the perfect family. If you know your Judy Blume books, you know that is never the case.
Throughout the book I felt like I was a silent observer of all going on in the town and learning how everyone's stories were all intertwined. We learn that life isn't always what it seems and that appearances can be deceiving.
I especially enjoyed how the author took real events and places and wove a fictional story around them. A solid, good read! - Rosanna (Downtown)
