Fall planting season is upon us! Get ready with Seed Swap! Join us at the Chandler Sunset Library on Monday, August 24, 5 - 7 pm, to share seeds and seed starts, meet local gardeners, and exchange gardening tips. You can participate even if you do not bring seeds. Seed Swap, now in its fourth year at Sunset, is great for master and novice gardeners alike.
Some of the groups who will be here this fall are Valley Permaculture Alliance, AZ Herb Association, and the Chandler Environmental Education Center. Some seeds that may be available for the Fall Seed Swap are anything lettuce-related (lettuce, cabbage, kale, mustard greens, chard, spinach), onions, garlic, green onion, leeks, carrots, peas, and all varieties of herbs. There are also often sunflowers and other wildflowers, and loofah seeds - which turn into the big loofahs you use in the shower!
What to do next? Learn more about gardening with the library's resources. Try taking a free course in starting your own edible garden from Gale Courses: online, instructor-led classes that you can do at your own pace. And don't forget to check the library's shelves for gardening books. Some of our favorites are Saving Vegetable Seeds, The Manual of Seed Saving, The Seed Underground, and From Seed to Skillet. You can take a look at our entire gardening section on the nonfiction shelves at 635.
Want even more gardening information? Check out magazines from Zinio, our online magazine collection, which features Organic Life, Country Gardens, Mother Earth News, Successful Farming, and numerous special issues full of gardening tips. Zinio magazines are free to you with your library card, and you can check out as many as you like for as long as you want - no due dates or fines!
