Chandler Public Library had a full house at its first TEDx event in January. Registration for its next TEDx event opens on Friday, April 29, 2016, at 9 a.m.
The evening event will be held on May 25, 6 - 9 p.m., with local speakers focusing on the theme Creating the Experience. Each of the four speakers and two performers will inspire attendees around the topic of arts and culture.
We are very excited to have the vibrant and talented Laurie Fagen serve as the emcee. An artist, classic jazz singer, art promoter, and crime fiction writer, she also ran an art gallery in Downtown Chandler, published the San Tan Sun News for 13 years, and has experience in public relations and broadcasting.
Blaise Lantana is probably most well known as the evening voice of KJZZ, introducing listeners to new jazz music, in her title as Music Director for the public radio station. She also uses her voice as a performing musician.
David Specht is an actor with an expertise in improvisation, as well as a small business owner in Downtown Chandler. He and his wife Colleen lend their talents to running improv MANIA, where they not only host comedy performances, but also teach classes.
Tomás Stanton is a poet, educator, teaching artist, Hip Hop thespian, and community organizer. He is the co-founder of the Valley’s premiere literary arts and youth development organization Phonetic Spit. He is also the founder and directing producer of the Soul Justice Project, which is the resident theatre experience of Phonetic Spit, dedicated to carving out new pathways of expression and storytelling.
Stella Pope Duarte is an award-winning author who has been described as a “major literary voice in America.” She teaches creative writing for colleges and universities in Arizona, as well as presenting at national conferences. She is currently working on a biography of civil rights leader Raul Yzaguirre.
Two performances will take place at the event. Arathi School of Dance offers training in popular classical dance style of India - Bharata Natya. Asha Gopal, instructor and founder of the school, has performed classical and folk dance styles all over the world. The Chandler Symphony will delight attendees with its Wind Ensemble, playing pieces specifically picked for the event.
The library is excited to have these unique local voices presenting talks and performances to attendees. Each one has a perspective on a different discipline of cultural expression and art.
