In 1770’s England, young, wealthy and eccentric Thomas Day is looking for a wife. Rejected by three women because of his tendency to lecture and his unkempt appearance, the discouraged Day hatches a plan to raise up the perfect wife based on his very idealistic expectations. How to Create the Perfect Wife is the true story of Day’s project. Using a married friend as a foil, he adopts two young girls from the Foundling Hospital and proceeds to attempt to educate them based on the revolutionary educational theories espoused by philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Well, as we know, theories are all fine and dandy but turning them into practical results many times backfires. And this is what happens to Day. His two young pupils revolt at the borderline abusive treatment Day uses to mold them into his perfect wife - and so he casts them off. What happens to the two girls and to Day afterwards is utterly fascinating and riveting. Moore is a very descriptive writer and she brings 18th-century England and these real people to life in a startling way. I felt I knew Day and his circle of friends. If you like books that bring the past to life and are also thoroughly entertaining, How to Create the Perfect Wife is the book for you. - Anbolyn (Sunset)
