“Summer Slide” might sound like a leisurely-paced ride down a mountain surrounded by green vistas and cool temperatures, but in reality, summer slide happens over those summer months when a student may lose reading and math achievements gained during the school year. No parent wants to see their child struggling to catch up after returning to school and children needn’t lose reading skills with a few fun activities to include in your summer schedule:
1. Sign up for the Summer Reading Program. It’s free! And it’s not too late to sign up! There are prizes when you accumulate points. Best of all, your child can select the books she wants to read without worrying about completing a school assignment. Then … read, read, read! Enjoy getting lost in a book!
2. Read aloud together. Select a well-written book you’ll both enjoy (ask one of our librarians for a recommendation!). Don’t worry about choosing a book that’s more difficult than your child would read on his own - that’s the benefit of reading the book together. He will enjoy hearing a story he can’t read independently and will naturally practice his listening comprehension skills; all the while, you’ll be spending quality time together.
3. Check out a Culture Pass, good for two free general admissions to a variety of venues. Summer should include fun, but why not learn and have fun at the same time? Cultural experiences serve to richen a child’s background, which helps with prior knowledge that will boost reading comprehension, so take time for some new cultural experiences!
4. Attend the library’s Summer Reading Program events, many of which blend learning and recreation. Don’t let the learning stop when school ends. It’s important for children to see that learning is DELIGHTFUL!
While you’re adding entertaining summer learning activities to your child’s day, why not include some for yourself this summer too? Heard of our Get Reel program? This series of documentary films continues on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. at the Downtown Chandler Library through July 12. There’s film fun for the whole family, too, with our Monday Family Movies at Downtown on Mondays at 2 p.m., Monday Matinees at Hamilton at 2 p.m., Friday Family Flix at Sunset at 2 p.m. and more! Take a look at our calendar of movie events at all four Chandler Library locations.
