Did you know January 29th is Amelia Bedelia Day? And January 18th was National Winnie the Pooh Day, too! Are children’s book characters important enough to warrant a special day? We sure think so!
Think of some of the values and characteristics you'd like to instill in your child. For each one that comes to mind, there's likely a character in a book to help you reinforce that idea. Here are a few time-tested favorites:
Peggy Parish’s series featuring the quirky Amelia Bedelia allows parents to develop their child's sense of humor while teaching them the difference between figurative and literal meanings of speech.
As he navigates life in the Hundred Acre Woods, Winnie the Pooh encourages tolerance and appreciation of all personalities by modeling how we can embrace relationships with those much different than ourselves.
Frog and Toad cleverly and warmly teach us all about the ins and outs of friendship. These two buddies wittily demonstrate how to be a great friend.
Speaking of a great friend, Arthur reminds us that no matter what life brings we can always choose to keep calm and be kind.
While Moe Willems’ Pigeon books are hilarious, they also serve to help a child see life from the viewpoint of the parent, as readers try desperately to keep Pigeon out of trouble.
Finally, if you have a child who is a bit of a perfectionist, struggling to “go with the flow,” introduce her to the always easygoing Pete the Cat.
These and many other delightful characters are sitting patiently on our shelves. They’re just waiting for the chance to help nurture in your child many of the values and characteristics most important to you. So when you think of it that way, of course Amelia Bedelia and Winnie the Pooh deserve a special day! Mark your calendars and celebrate with a book or two from the library.
