What brings parents and children from all over the city to Chandler Public Libraries? Storytime! High Five is a great addition to Storytimes at Chandler Public Library, and introduces five key concepts in early literacy: Talk, Sing, Read, Write and Play. Read on for some great playtime ideas that will encourage language learning.
Bath time is a great opportunity to incorporate reading and child-led playtime. As long as your child is safe sitting up in the tub unassisted, you can try reading a few stories well before their fingers and toes get pruney. Supply toys that go along with the theme of the book and let your child act out the story as you read. Requesting a retelling of the story brings attention to the idea that books have a beginning, middle and end. If your child gets the sequencing wrong, or creates an entirely new story, just sit back and enjoy watching his imagination in action.
Five Little Ducks by Ivan Bates and Duck, Duck, Dinosaur: Bubble Blast by Eileen Spinelli are a couple of great choices to get you started. Or grab some child-safe bowls and kitchen utensils for a little bathtime rendition of Bunny Cakes by Rosemary Wells. Plastic Easter eggs pair well with Jory John’s The Good Egg. Well, you get the idea. Now grab some books plus a few accoutrements and start playing!
