The holiday season is here and if you’re looking for something fun to read with a seasonal backdrop, look no further than Jasmine Guillory’s latest, Royal Holiday. This wonderful story is about an American woman who tags along with her daughter’s work trip to England during the holiday season. While her daughter is busy, she fills her time with sightseeing and meeting a man. I loved that like the author’s other books, the characters are multicultural, and even better, the main character is an older woman (maybe in her 50’s), which we don’t see in many contemporary romances.
I learned about this author a few years ago through a co-worker and have been hooked on her books since then. Her modern romantic comedies feature smart, capable heroines who excel in their careers and lead full lives surrounded by supportive friends and families. The women in her books view the relationships as a life enhancement rather than a requirement. Jasmine Guillory doesn't shy away from examining the relatable issues her multicultural couples face but never sacrifices sexiness or humor.
Reading The Wedding Date series introduced me to the contemporary romance genre and dispelled many of my incorrect assumptions about romance books. Since then, I have read quite a few more books in this genre and found they dealt with current, legitimate issues such as friends with benefits, long-distance dating, careers and interracial relationships. The characters are completely relatable and represent people that I know or wish that I knew. They deal with real life issues, worries and anxieties.
Some of my recent favorite contemporary romances are:
- Not the Girl You Marry by Andie Christopher
- The Right Swipe by Alisha Rai
- How to Hack a Heartbreak by Kristin Rockaway
- Fix Her Up by Tessa Bailey
- The Friend Zone by Abby Jimenez
- The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren
- Rosanna (Admin)
