The Book Thief is a historical novel told by an unlikely narrator: a girl named Liesel growing up in Germany during WWII. She steals books to read and finds comfort in both the act and the stories they contain. This novel includes important themes like literacy, power and death, as well as hidden deeper meanings that have the ability to change your perspective of ordinary people living in that time period.
Although this book is very sad, I really enjoyed reading it. The author has the ability to take unlikeable characters and make you think more deeply about them and why they behave the way they do, ultimately completely changing your opinion once you learn the truth about them. Not only is the writing style fantastic and easy to follow, the plots and characters are interesting and fully fleshed out and developed, conveying their authenticity. I would recommend this book for tweens, although some parts of it, taking place during WWII, might be a bit out there for younger kids. - Salma G. (Sunset Teen Advisory Council)
