This miniseries, based on two books by Hilary Mantel, ended its run on PBS on Sunday, but if you can’t get enough of descriptive and atmospheric historical settings, palace intrigue and political machinations, here are a few books to try while you wait for Mantel’s ending to her Thomas Cromwell trilogy (due next year). King has been keeping Sherlock Holmes alive in her highly acclaimed series of novels, pairing him with a character of her own creation: Mary Russell, a young sleuth with a dramatic past who eventually becomes Holmes's wife. "Dreaming Spies" is the thirteenth book in the series, but while this adventure fills some holes in King's timeline, its main story stands alone and can be read without having read the other volumes.
